Villimalé Hospital's services moved to the Aman Hiya building on Wednesday, the first step towards replacing the hospital with a new 100-bed facility.
Emergency and general outpatient services are now operating in the interim building, Ibrahim Abdulrazzaq Haleem, chief executive of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, said.
Dental, physiotherapy and dialysis services will move once a lift is installed in the building. Until then those services are available at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
The Road Development Corporation carried out the relocation.
The existing hospital, which has three consultation rooms and a five-bed emergency area, will be demolished. The new hospital will be built across the footprint of two buildings.
Plans include emergency, diagnostics, intensive care and haemodialysis departments, as well as inpatient and outpatient areas. Detailed design work has begun. The hospital is to be built with assistance from the Chinese government.
