The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has opened applications for scholarships to study abroad at bachelor's and master's level in fisheries, mariculture and marine research.
The ministry said 14 places are available across the three areas. The scholarships are offered under the Transforming Fisheries Sector Management in the South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives project, run by the government with the World Bank, to build technical skills in the sector.
According to the ministry, the courses will be taken in countries in Asia, member states of the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission and countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Subjects listed by the ministry include aquatic health or pathology, marine science with a focus on GIS or oceanography, and agriculture (botany and entomology), alongside fisheries, marine research and mariculture.
Who can apply
Applicants for a master's degree must hold a bachelor's degree in a related field and have at least two years' work experience in the sector, the ministry said.
Bachelor's applicants must have a grade C or above in five subjects at GCE O level and three subjects at A level, or have completed a recognised foundation qualification.
The ministry said successful candidates will receive course fees, an annual book allowance, establishment and departure allowances, and a monthly stipend.
