The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade held a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony on 5 November, the climate ministry said on X. The deal is meant to strengthen technical capacity for the maintenance and repair of electric vehicles and charging stations.
What the ministry says
The ministry called the MoU another important step towards the Maldives' transition to cleaner and more sustainable transport. Technical personnel from relevant sectors across the Maldives will have the chance to receive specialised training in maintaining and repairing electric vehicles and charging stations.
Why it matters
The initiative aims to develop local expertise to support the long-term operation and maintenance of the electric buses and other electric vehicles provided under the GEF-funded Integrated, Sustainable and Low Emissions Transport in the Maldives (ISLET) Project. GEF is the Global Environment Facility.
It also aims to strengthen national capacity for similar electric mobility and sustainable transport projects in future. The statement gave no training numbers, dates or costs.
