The Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) has reminded the public that capturing, keeping or harming migratory birds is prohibited under environmental regulations in the Maldives.
The authority issued the reminder on 1 October, as the country entered its annual migratory bird season, which coincides with the northeast monsoon, known locally as Iruvai.
Despite the warning, videos circulating on social media show migratory birds being kept at homes, some with clipped wings.
The birds shown include species known locally as bulhithunbi and raabondhi, along with other protected species.
The ERA said birds are being trapped and then sold.
Protected species
Migratory birds are protected under the Regulation on the Protection and Conservation of Species. Capturing or harming them can lead to fines under environmental regulations, the authority said.
The ERA has asked the public to report any cases. Reports should include the identities of those involved, the location, including the house name, island and atoll, and the species involved.
The authority said photos or videos should be shared with reports where available.
