Italy has become the fifth country to send more than 100,000 visitors to the Maldives so far this year, according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
The ministry said 100,186 Italian visitors had arrived by Monday. In total, 1.6 million visitors have come to the Maldives since the start of the year, 3.4 percent fewer than in the same period last year.
China remains the largest source market with 314,519 visitors, followed by Russia with 237,203, the United Kingdom with 123,336 and Germany with 105,024.
There are now 1,294 tourist establishments open across the country, with a combined capacity of 68,093 beds.
Arrivals fell sharply earlier in the year. The tourism minister has said numbers in March, April and May were 24 percent below the same months last year, which he linked to unrest in the Middle East. He said work by the government and the tourism industry has since narrowed that gap to 1.3 percent, and that arrivals should finish the year roughly level with 2025.
