President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has dissolved the Malé City Group of Hospitals and set up the Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group (MTHG), bringing the country's government-run tertiary hospitals under one governing board. The President's Office announced the decision on 2 November 2026.

One board, 12 institutions

The aim is to place all government-operated tertiary hospitals, and hospitals being developed into tertiary-level facilities, under a single governing body through a hybrid centralised administrative model.

The MTHG board will work under the President's directives and answer to him. The group is affiliated with the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare. The board will oversee these 12 institutions:

  • Dharumavantha Hospital

  • Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)

  • Hulhumalé Hospital

  • Vilimalé Hospital
