Maldives Customs has seized foreign currency worth MVR 905,669.80 from a passenger who was attempting to carry it out of the country without declaring it, the service said.

The money was found last Wednesday at Velana International Airport, where the passenger, an Indian national, was preparing to leave the Maldives, Customs said in a post announcing the seizure.

The notes included the currencies of several different countries, according to Customs, although the service did not say which currencies were involved or how much of each was found.

Travellers leaving the Maldives must declare foreign currency above the threshold set in the country's customs rules. Money that is not declared can be held, and those carrying it can face legal action.

The seizure is the latest in a run of similar cases at the same airport. On 18 September, six foreign nationals were stopped with about MVR 3.86 million in foreign currency hidden inside cereal packets as they prepared to fly to Bangladesh.

Police said at the time that the haul included USD 174,161, EUR 56,760 and GBP 1,815, with notes from 18 countries in total.

Last Tuesday, police also searched four foreign nationals and one Maldivian in a case involving the provision of banking services without a licence.

Authorities say the number of people detained over unlicensed foreign exchange dealing has been rising, and that efforts to identify those running such operations have been widened.
