Gadhdhoo Magistrate Court has sentenced Ali Shazeen to 25 years in prison and fined him MVR 100,000 for diamorphine trafficking. Shazeen is from Gadhdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
According to Sun Online, the court convicted Shazeen on two charges and sentenced him on Sunday.
The case concerned an area where Shazeen had been farming on Gan in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. According to reported police information, drugs were suspected of being stored and sold there.
Police searched the site under a court order following those suspicions. Police said the search uncovered suspected drugs and fermented toddy.
After completing the investigation, police referred the case to the Prosecutor General's Office on September 1, 2021. Two charges were subsequently brought against Shazeen.
The charges were drug trafficking and carrying out an activity requiring permission without obtaining it. According to the report, the court found both charges proven.
