Former North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Sinan has been appointed managing director of state-owned Agro National Corporation (AgroNat), according to Corporate Maldives.
The report said the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) board formalised his appointment following AgroNat’s integration into the fisheries company as a subsidiary. MIFCO chief executive Mohamed Anas was also named AgroNat’s chairperson as part of the management restructuring.
The appointment places Sinan at the head of the agricultural company after he lost his seat in the People's Majlis. Corporate Maldives reported that his removal followed a Supreme Court ruling concerning unpaid debt obligations.
Sinan subsequently won the People’s National Congress primary for the North Hithadhoo by-election but later gave up the opportunity to contest, the report said.
Established in April 2020, AgroNat’s work includes managing agricultural supply chains and supporting contract farmers. Its mandate also includes reducing island communities’ reliance on imported produce.
According to the report, MIFCO expressed confidence that the new leadership would strengthen AgroNat’s operations and help develop an integrated national food distribution system.
The supplied material does not specify an effective date for either appointment or provide further details of the subsidiary arrangement.
